Who we are

The Spice, Herbs and Aromatic subsector is one of the agribusiness subsectors under the ENTAG project with main goal of Increasing spice, herbs and aromatic plants productivity and trade(domestic and export) by strengthening Small and medium micro-enterprises; in working more effectively with smallholder and commercial farmers, in applying new production and agro-processing technologies and accessing finance for investment purposes.

What We do

We assist your business to grow and to be more effective by providing the following agribusiness Support:

1. Front Office: hands-on support for both Ethiopian and foreign companies in areas of legal and tax issues, business viability information and investment facilitation will be take care of.

2. B2B linkage and Match Making: trade mission to and from Ethiopia will be organized in order to create market linkage and build the capacity of the private sector via business visit.

3. Supporting Platform meeting: In collaboration with ESAHGPA, we organize demand driven quarterly private sector platform meeting where policy dialogue, business experience and knowledge sharing and business networking will take place. The meeting will be in and out of Addis Ababa.

4. Agribusiness Innovation (and/or Matching) Fund: Co- Financing business Ideas that solve sector challenges

5. Inclusive Business Facility (CSR, Out Grower, Finance): technical and financial support for companies working in sustainable and inclusive spice, herbs and aromatic value chain development will be provided

6. Strengthening the Ethiopian Spice, Aromatic and Herbs Growers and processors Association (ESAHGPA): Building its capacity in all rounds to be self sustained by increasing membership and enable the association to provide efficient service portfolio for its members.

1. Ethiopian Spice, Herbs and Aromatics

The tremendous diversity of agro-ecologies in Ethiopia enables the country to be home for growing wide varieties of spice, herbs and aromatic plants. The country is suitable to grow 60-100 species of commercially important spice, herbs and aromatic plants. Among spices the largest produce are: chilies, ginger, black cumin, fenugreek, white cumin, coriander, turmeric, BlackCardamom(Korerima), Black pepper, mustard, long pepper and to small extent Indian cardamom, cinnamon, tamarind and vanilla.

Basil, Celery, Parsley, Fennel, Dill, Rosemary, Thyme, Rue and Kosseret are the major herbs produced in the country. Hibiscus, Stevia, Artemisia, Chives, Rocolla, Chervils, Sorrel, Sage, Mint, Tarragon, Lovage, Majoram. Oregano and savory are also produced at commercial farms mainly for export market.

In addition to the aromatic oils that can be produced from spice and herbs the country is also suitable for growing and production of aromatic oils from globules, citriodora, Lemmon verbena, Damask rose, Lemmon grass, Palma rose, lavender, citronella, vetiver grass, gums and resins.

The total area of production range between 330,000 ha and 500,000 ha with increase of annual production from 238,000 MT in 2005 to 418,000 MT in 2013. Even though, the country is rich in having suitable ecological zones across whole regions, 94% of the production came only from the three main producing regions: SNNP, Oromia and Amhara which contributed 37%, 32% and 25% of the total annual production, respectively.

Generally the production of spice, herbs and aromatic plants in Ethiopia is based mainly based on traditional unimproved farming systems where yields have stagnant and well below world average. ENTAG in collaboration with its partners has planned to play key roles in improving productivity and quality of Ethiopian spices, herbs and aromatic products.

2. Market

Regardless of several intervention and improvement required the Ethiopian spice, herbs and aromatic trade (import and export) has been growing very fast. In year 2014 the total Ethiopian spice export reached USD$33 million where Africa and Middle East countries took the lion Share. The share to high value market such as to EU, America and Japan is very small less than 6% which is mainly due to lack of access to market and market information.

Accounting for 1.79% of Ethiopian household expenditure, spices play a major role in the local diet, in particular in rural households and today Ethiopia (90% of production) is one of the largest spice consumers in Africa.

Thus ENTAG will work in attracting new both local and foreign investment to take advantage of these untapped business opportunities of the spice, herbs and aromatic sector in the country.

3. Ethiopian Spice, Aromatic and Herbs Growers and Processors Association(ESAHGPA)

ESAHGPA is the umbrella organization for the Ethiopian spice, herbs and aromatic industry to represent the interest of its members in all matters pertaining to the production, processing, packing, quality assurance and food safety and/or marketing of spices, herbs, aromatic plants and their processed products (e.g. oleoresin, essential oil and seasonings). The association was established on April 30, 2015 under the Ministry of Industry.
